Liveness Detection

Liveness detection is the verification layer that assesses whether a biometric capture is a live presentation by the person present, rather than a photograph, screen replay, mask or other presentation attack.

Active and passive liveness checks

Active liveness checks ask the user to complete simple guided actions — such as turning the head or blinking — during capture. Passive liveness checks analyse characteristics of the capture itself without additional user actions. The platform architecture supports both, along with presentation-attack detection and capture quality assessment, ready for integration with an appropriate biometric/liveness provider.

Capture quality assessment

Before liveness is assessed, the workflow checks framing, distance and lighting. Poor-quality captures are rejected at the point of capture with clear retry guidance, minimising unnecessary steps while protecting the reliability of the assessment.

An honest security boundary

Liveness detection meaningfully raises the effort required for presentation attacks, but no liveness technology is an absolute guarantee against every possible attack. Results are expressed clearly — Liveness Passed, Liveness Failed, Liveness Inconclusive or Additional Review Required — and inconclusive results are escalated to expert review.

Result States

Results are expressed as clear, technically defensible verification assessments:

Liveness Passed Liveness Failed Liveness Inconclusive Additional Review Required

What is liveness detection?

Liveness detection assesses whether a biometric capture is a live presentation rather than a replay, photograph or other presentation attack.

Liveness technologies analyse signals such as motion, texture, depth and response to guided actions to distinguish a live person from a presented artifact. Active checks require user cooperation; passive checks analyse the capture itself. Because attackers continuously evolve their techniques, liveness results are treated as risk indicators within a broader evidence-based assessment — not as an absolute guarantee.

Privacy note: this capability follows our privacy-first biometric architecture — explicit consent, data minimization, least-privilege access and audit logging. Biometric information is never exposed on public verification pages.
